Clear-Sighted
There was nothing elementary
the moment I first put eyeglasses on
wearing my new super flyer
sneakers, I tried to hide my
surprise seeing my mother's face
close-up, noticing little craters
on the surface of her skin
she knew at once, covering
her cheeks with the warm hands
that knew how my life babbled
through every part of me and my
running days
she looked so sad
I was stopped in my tracks
certain I would do everything
I could to protect her
for all the time left between
the blinks of our eyes
